In 1989,I graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, with a Master of Physical Therapy. In 1992 I was diagnosed with Cancer. I had radiation treatments. I lost the back of my hair. I came back in 5 weeks. I had my own Physical Therapy Business in 1994. In 1995 I had Massive Stroke. I was in Intensive Care Unit in HUP for 2 weeks. Then I was at BMRH inpatient for 4 weeks. I had Aphasia – that means my brain knows what to say but my mouth doesn’t for 4 -5 years. I couldn’t work anymore but….. I was happy that I was ALIVE.
I was working at a Diner in Media part-time. I was a hostess. I sat my present boss to the table. She asked me did I have a disability. I said yes. Ann (present boss) told me that I should volunteer at Freedom Valley Disability Center in Newtown Square. So, I did. A year later I interviewed and I get the job! Consumers call us and they are so scared that their whole existence is gone. I talk one-on-one to consumer about how I survived and I am happier than I’ve ever been.
